Located on Virginia's Middle Peninsula, Essex County is centrally situated just outside the Washington to Norfolk urban crescent.

The county's principal town, Tappahannock, dates back to a 17th century port settlement. The historic cities of Fredericksburg (40 miles north) and Williamsburg (56 miles SE) are within an hour's drive. ​

  • Season Opening of the Marsh Steet Pool

    05/26/2017 - The Marsh Street Pool will open for the season on Saturday, May 27th at 11:00 AM. The pool will be open on weekends until June 20th when normal summer hours will begin. 

  • Essex County Board of Supervisors and Essex County School Board Joint Meeting

    05/24/2017 - The Essex County Board of Supervisors and the Essex County School Board will be holding a joint meeting at 7:00 P.M. at the Beale Building located at 202 South Church Lane on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. The agenda is available on BoardDocs.com, which is accessible by visiting www.essex.k12.va.us, clicking on School Board, BoardDocs, and public site. Paper copies may be picked up at 109 N. Cross Street in Tappahannock or requested by calling 804-443-4366. 

  • June 10: Triad Salutes Seniors on its Birthday

    05/18/2017 - It’s a PARTY! To celebrate a year since its official “signing,” the Essex Co.-Tappahannock Triad invites all seniors and friends to a Triad Birthday Salute. It runs from 10 am – 1 pm on Saturday, June 10, at the Tappahannock-Essex Volunteer Fire Dept. on Airport Road. NOTE: There will NOT be a regular meeting on the second Tuesday (June 6) because of the special event. 

  • 2017 1st Half Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes

    05/12/2017 - 2017 1st Half Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes are due by June 5, 2017 to avoid penalty and interest charges. 

  • Appeal for Applications to Serve on a Board, Commission, or Authority

    05/04/2017 - The Board of Supervisors is requesting interested residents apply to serve on local and regional Boards, Commissions, and Authorities which have terms expiring on June 30, 2017. Deadline to apply is May 31, 2017.
