YOU and FALLS: prevent, strengthen, protect yourself

Please join the Essex Co.-Tappahannock Triad on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. at the Historic Beale Baptist Church Sanctuary, corner of Church Lane & Queen Street. The speaker is Morgan Chenault, licensed physical therapist assistant at Belfield Physical Therapy in Warsaw.

Morgan, an Essex Co. native, saw how physical therapy helped her grandfather maintain mobility and overall quality of life as he lived with Parkinson’s disease. She’ll join us to share her insights on preventing falls and show us some strengthening exercises to do at home. She’ll also talk about the Silver Sneakers program offered at Belfield Physical Therapy.

As we age, balance and mobility are vital to staying independent. More than one in three people age 65 years or older falls each year, according to the National Institute on Aging. And the risk of falling—and fall-related problems—rises with age. Thousands of older men and women fall and break a bone each year. For older people, a break can be the start of more serious problems, such as a trip to the hospital, injury, or even disability.

Find out how not to become part of that statistic. Join the Triad on Oct. 3. Triad is a partnership among law enforcement, older citizens and their family and friends, and community organizations. Its goal is to enhance the safety and quality of life of older citizens, and people of all ages are welcome. For more information, email the Triad at essextriad@gmail.com, or contact the Tappahannock Police Dept. 804-443-3992.
