Virginia Northern Neck – Middle Peninsula Cybersecurity Partnering Workshop

Virginia Northern Neck – Middle Peninsula Cybersecurity Partnering Workshop

Background
The workshop is one element of the George Mason University - National Science Foundation Cybersecurity City and County Cross Jurisdictional Collaboration project having the goal of furthering town, county and city cybersecurity efforts by developing foundations and policies that enable and foster local government cybersecurity partnerships.   The motivation for the project is that many U.S. local governments have relatively limited budgets and expertise to address the major and rapidly changing cybersecurity threat.   In addition, many towns, counties and cities are increasingly adopting connected technology not just for administration but also for critical infrastructure such as electric, water and emergency services.

Through partnering with local governments in areas such as cybersecurity governance, staffing, communications and technology / technology procurement, towns, counties and cities are better able to address their cybersecurity needs.

The workshop builds upon a Commonwealth of Virginia wide workshop held in Richmond, Virginia on October 3rd, 2017.  Attendees and participants were Virginia city, town, and county cybersecurity and IT leaders, other local government administrators, state cybersecurity leaders including Secretary Moran, Commonwealth of Virginia Secretary of Homeland Security and Public Safety who kindly gave an opening talk, and DHS.

The results of the Commonwealth of Virginia workshop were partnering, policy and legislative recommendations and associated initiatives in the areas of governance, joint staffing, technology / procurement and communications.
