ESSEX COUNTY SHERIFF

Job Title: Communications Operator - Dispatch 
Status:  Full Time, Grade 108, with benefits and
                 Part-time, no benefits

The Sheriff of Essex County is seeking a full time and part-time individuals to perform radio and communications work in the communications division of the Sheriff’s Department on an assigned shift. The Communications Operator position performs skilled emergency service work that involves receiving emergency 911 and non-emergency requests for law enforcement assistance, determining nature/urgency of law enforcement, initiating law enforcement or other emergency personnel action (i.e., Sheriff, Fire, Public works, Animal Control, Virginia Highway Department, etc.) and maintaining close contact with field units to monitor response and needed support requirements. Employee must be able to operate a computer terminal connected to the Virginia Criminal and the National Crime Information Center. Employee must exercise considerable tact and firmness in obtaining information from distressed person(s). Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in receiving messages, responding to emergency situations, and dispatching calls. This position performs work under the supervision of the Communications Supervisor.  This position works varied shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

A high school diploma or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job is required.  Must complete Basic Dispatch School and obtain VCIN Certification within first year of employment. A criminal background check is required.

Job Title:  Maintenance Assistant
Status:  Part-time - $9.50 – 24 hours a week
Grade:  101 - Range $9.49 - $15.19


Essex County is seeking an individual to perform semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of the County's buildings and grounds. This work involves operating medium to light machinery and using hand tools to assist with HVAC, other building and maintenance repairs and landscaping duties. The preferred applicant will have experience operating all types of lawn care equipment.  A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.  This position reports to the Grounds Supervisor.

Job Title:  Building Code Technical Assistant/Compliance Officer
Status:  Part-time - $20.00 – 24 hours a week
Grade:  111 - Range $17.82 - $28.52


Essex County is seeking an individual to perform a variety of administrative functions in the building department.  This position is responsible for the issuance of land use permits, establishing the emergency addresses for all new construction, reviewing plans, issuing permits, answering questions regarding code enforcement, and performing inspections to ensure that the building code is properly enforced as required by Virginia State Law.  Certification as Building Code Technical Assistant must be obtained within 18 months of hire and the Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector Certificate must be obtained within 12 months of hire.   A valid Virginia driver’s license is also required.  The Building Code Technical Assistant/Compliance Officer reports directly to the Building Official.

Director of Technology, Essex County

Essex County is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Technology  
Salary: $53,078 - $90,234 DOQ/DOE (+) benefits.

This Director of Technology is responsible managing the County’s computer and data resources. This position performs responsible work in planning, coordinating, implementing, and supervising the management of the County’s information systems operation. This position serves as the Webmaster for the County, overseeing technical management and the maintenance of the County’s web site(s).  

The successful candidate will have any combination of education equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in computer science or a closely related field supplemented with five years of experience in information technology/support.

Job Title: Deputy County Administrator 
Status:  Full time, Salary:  $65,755 – $111,784
Pay Grade:  121, FLSA Status:  Exempt


Essex County, Virginia, is accepting applications for the new position of Deputy County Administrator.  This position will coordinate and oversee the operation of various departments to include Finance, Administrative Services, Parks and Recreation, and Animal Control.  The selected individual will be the County’s primary economic development contact person and provide staff support to the County’s Economic Development Authority.  This position also takes the lead in the development of the County’s annual operating budget and provides financial analysis for the County Administrator and Board.  Excellent writing and communication skills are a must.  This is a high profile position with considerable staff and public interaction requiring the highest level of professional and personal ethics and trust. This position will report to the County Administrator.

Minimum requirements for the position are a Bachelors’ degree in public or business administration, or related field, with six or more years of professional management level experience at the level of department director or higher in local government administration, or any combination of education and experience which demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.  Master’s degree in public administration and experience as a Deputy County Administrator or higher is preferred.  The County provides a competitive salary with excellent benefits.

Candidates will perform emergency medical advanced life support services and firefighter duties as required.
