Phone Scams

Posted on 07/23/2019

Today the admin office received a call from a concerned citizen of the county.  The resident received a call and it showed on their Caller ID, Essex County, and a 443 number.  If you receive a call from anyone and you are unsure of who they are ask questions take notes, then call the entity back from a publicly posted phone number.  Never give out personal information to parties you are unfamiliar with.  Lastly, if the problem persists contact your local Sheriff’s Office and report the calls.

What is Caller ID Spoofing? Caller ID spoofing is technology that allows you to alter your caller ID in order to hide the true originator of the call.  In simpler terms, caller ID spoofing allows you to display a phone number different than the actual number from which the call was placed. With caller ID spoofing, you can send and receive outgoing or incoming phone calls or texts that appear to be from any phone number.  This makes you much more likely to answer the call, and therefore even more likely to fall for a phone scam.
