Start Older Americans Month May 1

With a Free Senior Health & Safety Fair

May is Older Americans Month, and the theme is “Engage at Every Age.” What better way to kick off the month than to show up at the Senior Health & Safety Fair on May 1, from 10 am – 2 pm at Beale Memorial Baptist Church, 19622 Tidewater Trail, Tappahannock?  You’ll find it all:

  • Free health screenings: blood pressure, blood sugar, balance, cancer risk assessment

  • Free lunch

  • Speakers on personal safety and countering ageism

  • More than two dozen providers of local services: health care, home  health, financial security, frauds and scams, senior living, Medicare, emergency services, public safety, Alzheimer’s disease, rehab and nursing care, transportation, caregiver support, and more

  • Lots of door prizes

  • If you need a ride, free transportation from Bay Transit, if you make a reservation by Friday, April 27; call 804-250-2011.

Health screenings include blood pressure, blood sugar, balance, and a cancer risk assessment questionnaire. You’ll be in good hands: Riverside Therapy Director Joe Durham will check balance; Riverside Home Health diabetic educator Bev Norris will check blood sugar; hospital staff will conduct the cancer assessment.

Tips on personal safety will be offered by Capt. Jacob Siddons of the Tappahannock Police Dept. and Jay Mitchell of the Virginia Marine Police. Dr. Ayn Welleford, chair of the VCU Department of Gerontology, will arm you with an understanding and tools to counter ageism.

More than two dozen providers of local services will be there to share information on health care, home  health, financial security, frauds and scams, senior living, Medicare, emergency services, public safety, Alzheimer’s disease, rehab and nursing care, transportation, caregiver support, and more.
